Carrier Reinvents Air Cond in Energy Efficiency
Carrier Corporation, USA, unveiled its newly designed central air conditioning system for the U.S. market, to be manufactured at its expanded facility in Collierville, TN. The new system will be optimized for the 13 SEER U.S. Department of Energy efficiency standard that takes effect in January 2006.
Speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony held on August 26, 2005, celebrating the expansion of the Collierville facility Carrier President Geraud Darnis said the corporation anticipates more than 30 new patents for this redesigned cooling system. Carrier's innovations make the product more energy efficient while reducing the size by 20%, weight by 30% and refrigerant charge by 40% compared to today's 13 SEER unit. Recalling the invention of modern air conditioning in 1902 by Dr. Willis Carrier, Darnis said, "We like to think that innovation is in our genes, and today we're reinventing air conditioning."
Carrier is investing $250 million in this product line for advanced technologies and features, and the expansion and retooling of their Collierville facility.
SEER - Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating - estimates the energy used by a unit over the course of one cooling season. 13 SEER is the new federally mandated minimum efficiency standard, 30% higher than today's standard of 10 SEER. Darnis emphasized that the 13 SEER standard is the right environmental choice providing significant energy savings for the country while reducing energy bills for homeowners. "The new standard represents an environmental leap for energy efficiency that will benefit the nation and consumers," he said.
CARRIER RECIEVES NATIONAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN
Grand Prize Winner for Residential HVAC Systems
INDIANAPOLIS, Aug 1, 2005 – As a proven leader in the heating and air conditioning industry, Carrier offers the most comprehensive line of HVAC products that help preserve the environment by reducing energy consumption and improving indoor air quality. Carrier’s commitment to designing total heating and cooling systems that are energy efficient and environmentally friendly has earned national recognition in Environmental Design + Construction Magazine’s Excellence in Design for Residential HVAC Systems.
“Carrier is proud to be leading the industry by providing consumers with environmentally-sound total comfort solutions in heating and air conditioning,” said Carrier President Halsey Cook. “Earning Grand Prize for our efforts in this area is a testament to our commitment to innovating the HVAC industry.” For the past decade, Carrier has offered an environmentally-sound refrigerant – Puron®. And on the dawn of the 13 SEER and R-22 phase out requirements, Carrier continues to lead the HVAC industry in innovation with an entire 13 SEER product offering with Puron.
The national award competition hosted by Environmental Design + Construction Magazine was open to product entries that clearly demonstrated a commitment to green building and sustainable design. Carrier received the award based on innovative design, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and other green design factors. The Grand Prize Winners were then chosen by a select panel of judges and will be featured in the September 2005 issue of the magazine.

Airconditioning Product Of The Year
UK-Carrier’s AquaSnap Puron air conditioner has won the 2005 H&V News Air Conditioning Product of the Year Award.
The judges acknowledged AquaSnap puron as “a step forward in air conditioning design” The incorporation of direct expansion free cooling into the package was described as “pioneering” – as might be expected of the industry’s leading innovators. The judges also praised the inventive use of thermosyphon technology within a standard product. Thermosyphon technology is a free cooling option, which takes advantage of the natural migration of the refrigerant in the coldest point of the chiller, which are the coils during winter.
The heart of the AquaSnap concept is the integration of the hydronic module, without a size penalty. Within its compact footprint all pumps, valves, expansion vessels and other hydronic accessories are factory-integrated into the design.
New compressor technology enables the Carrier Aquasnap Puron to use the energy-efficient, non-ozone depleting refrigerant 2005 WINNER R410A, over the 190-760kW ranges.
The H&V News, a weekly HVAC journal, is the UK’s largest circulation HVAC trade magazine. The publication’s awards are the most prestigious in the industry. At the awards dinner, Carrier’s guests saw the trophy lifted by U.K. Carrier Commercial Director Richard Ward.
